The main tasks of the Center of the South Pacific Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS are:

1. Study of the history, economy, culture, domestic and foreign policy of the countries of the South Pacific.
2. Research on regional security issues in the South Pacific.
3. History, current state and prospects of the relations between Russia and the countries of the South Pacific. Developing the prospects for relations between the countries of the South Pacific and Russia. Study of the Russian diplomacy peculiarities in the region and its traditions that could contribute to the development of relations between Russia and Australia, Russia and Oceania.
4. Analysis of the policy of the World Powers (USA, Japan, France, China, etc.) in the region.
5. Storage, replenishment, description and digitization of manuscripts and published works, of rare works of Russian scientists (South Pacific specialists) in order to preserve and develop the traditions of Russian Oriental studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS – one of the oldest academic institutions in Russia.
6. Preparation of monographs and conferences on history, culture, politics, economy, etc. of the countries of the South Pacific.
7. Publication of archival documents, including travel notes, memoirs, etc., related to the countries of the South Pacific.
8. Strengthening the international relations between the Center of the South Pacific Studies with foreign scientific centers around the world.
9. Development of closer scientific relations between specialists from the Russian Federation and their colleagues from the countries of the South Pacific.

4. Age-old traditions in the contemporary history, prospects for historical and cultural, trade and economic, political and diplomatic relations between Russia and the countries of the South Pacific.
5. Cultural and spiritual heritage of the countries of the South Pacific.
6. Preservation and study of the scientific heritage of the leading South Pacific researchers from Russia.
